조지 뮬러는 성경을 백번 읽고 기쁨이 충만하여 다음과 같이 말했다. “나는 하나님의 말씀을 읽지 못한 날은 나에게 있어서 잃어버린 날이었다고 생각한다. 사람들은 흔히 ‘해야 할 일이 너무 많아 성경을 읽을 시간을 낼 수 없다’라고 말한다. 아마도 나보다 더 바쁜 사람은 많지 않을 것이다.

50년 동안 단 하루도 내가 끝내야 할 일을 다 마친 적은 없는 듯하다. 지난 4년 동안 나는 3만 통의 편지를 받아 거의 모두 읽었다. 그리고 1,200명의 교인을 돌보는 목회자로서 섬기고 있다. 게다가 나는 5개의 큰 고아원을 운영한다. 또한 수많은 분야에서 책을 만들고 성경을 출판하는 일도 하고 있다. 그러나 나는 언제나 모든 일을 시작하기 전에 하나님과 교제하고 성경을 읽는 것을 철칙으로 삼고 있다. 그리고 내가 받은 축복은 말로 표현할 수 없을 만큼 귀한 것이었다.”

조지 뮬러와 같이 성경을 읽어야 하는 이유는 무엇일까? 기독교 변증가들이 다음과 같은 증거 자료를 보고하고 있기 때문이다. “1850년부터 과학에 근거하여 성경을 비평하는 이론이 700가지였다고 한다. 그런데 지금은 그중 600가지가 사라졌다고 한다.” 이 보고가 주는 의미는 무엇일까? 과학에 근거한 비평 이론 600가지가 없어졌다는 것은 성경의 모든 말씀이 옳다는 것으로 밝혀졌음을 의미한다. 성경은 거짓을 말하지 않으며, 반드시 그 말씀대로 이루어진다는 것을 보여준다.

그러므로 성도의 사명은 말씀을 묵상하며 말씀을 믿으며 말씀대로 사는 것이다. 그러나 인간에겐 한 가지 단점이 있다. 아무리 중요한 것도 자주 보지 않으면 잊힌다는 것이다. 그리고 눈에 보이는 대로 산다.

그런 이유로 하나님은 하나님의 말씀을 네 입에서 떠나게 하지 말라고 명하셨다. 시편은 말씀을 주야로 묵상하는 자가 복되다고 말씀하고 있다. 그는 시냇가에 심은 나무처럼 사시사철 열매를 맺는다고 말씀하고 있다.

아무리 바빠도 성경만은 읽고 묵상하자.

“We must read the Bible, even when we are busy”
George Müller, who read the Bible a hundred times, once joyfully declared, “I consider a day in which I have not read the Word of God to be a lost day. People often say, ‘I have so much work to do that I cannot make time to read the Bible.’ I am probably busier than most people. For 50 years, there has not been a single day when I finished all the work I had to do. Over the past 4 years, I received 30,000 letters and read almost all of them. I serve as a pastor for a church of 1,200 members. On top of that, I manage five large orphanages, publish books, and print Bibles. However, I always make time to have fellowship with God and read the Bible before I do any work. As a result, the blessings I have received are precious beyond words.”

Why should we read the Bible like George Müller? According to Christian apologists, since 1850, 700 theories have criticized the Bible based on scientific claims. However, 600 of these theories have been disproven. What is the significance of this? The disproving of 600 science-based critical theories means it has been revealed that every word of the Bible is true. It proved that the Bible does not lie and its prophecies will certainly come to pass.
Therefore, the calling of a believer is to meditate on the Word, believe the Word, and live according to the Word. No matter how important something is, we tend to forget easily if we are not reminded. And we tend to live according to what is visible. For that reason, God commanded that the Word of God should not depart from our mouths. According to the book of Psalms, blessed are those who meditate on the Word day and night; they will be like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in all seasons.

Thus, no matter how busy we may be, let us remember to read the Bible and meditate on His Word.
