시계를 열어 보면 시계의 톱니바퀴들은 서로 반대 방향으로 돌아간다. 그 모든 톱니바퀴들은 시계를 만든 사람의 의도에 따라서 돌고 있고 결국 정확한 시간이라는 것을 만들어 낸다.
하나님이 다스리는 세상을 보면 톱니바퀴들이 도는 것과 같다. 어떤 일들은 하나님의 약속과는 아주 거리가 먼 것처럼 다르게 전개되는 듯이 보이나 결국 그것들은 다 하나님의 정하신 약속을 이루기 위해 존재한다.
십자가에 달린 예수님을 생각할 때 그 시대의 제자들은 죄 없으신 하나님의 아들이 왜 악한 무리들에 의하여 힘없이 억울한 죽음을 당해야만 했는가를 생각했을 것이다. 그러나 예수님이 그렇게 억울한 죽음을 당하신 것은 우리 인간의 구원을 위하여 메시아는 십자가에 달려 죽어야 한다는 약속을 이루기 위함이었다.
예수님은 십자가 위에서도 사람들의 눈에는 다른 강도들보다 더 불행한 것처럼 보였으니 십자가에 달리신지 6시간 만에 죽으셨기 때문이다. 그러나 그것도 역시 메시아는 다리가 꺾이지 아니하리라는 예언을 이루기 위함이었다.
우리의 삶도 역시 이런 하나님의 섭리 아래 있음을 기억하며 오늘 납득되지 않는 일을 당할 때 귀하신 뜻이 이루어지고 있음을 인정하라.
“Let’s acknowledge the Lord like this”
If you open up a watch, you will see its gears turning, often in opposite directions. Each gear turns as intended by the watchmaker and ultimately shows the exact time. The way God rules over the world seems to move like gears. Some events seem to unfold in ways that do not have much to do with His promises. But ultimately, they all serve to fulfill His purpose.
When Jesus was hanged on the cross, the disciples at the time must have wondered why the sinless Son of God had to suffer an unjust death at the hands of the wicked. However, His death fulfilled the prophecy of the Messiah-that He would die on the cross to save all of mankind.
Compared to the robbers, even the way Jesus died on the cross seemed unfair, for He died quickly—just six hours after being crucified. Yet, this was also a fulfillment of the prophecy that the Messiah’s legs would not be broken.
Let us remember that our lives are also under God’s providence. Thus, even when we face situations that are incomprehensible or unfair, we must acknowledge that His sovereign will is being fulfilled.
