Our church summer camp once incubated fertilized chicken eggs to show children how chicks hatch and grow. After hatching, several chicks were born. However, one chick was born with a twisted neck. At first, we assumed the neck would straighten as the chick grew. But even after it matured into a young chicken, its neck remained twisted, and it seemed like it would die soon. Consequently, church members tried various methods to save the chicken. Some suggested buying a device to hold its neck upright, while others proposed getting a wheelchair for it.
So, we looked into wheelchairs designed for chickens and discovered that a specialized model was available only in Sydney, Australia. However, the cost was prohibitive; both the wheelchair itself and the shipping fees were very high. Consequently, we had a serious discussion about whether we should buy such an expensive wheelchair for a chicken. Then, one day, the chicken was nowhere to be seen. When I asked where it was, one of the pastors said they had taken care of it. I asked what that meant. And that person said, “I think chickens are something to be eaten.” That was when I realized, “Ah, that’s right! Chickens are meant to be eaten!” Of course, it is possible to keep chickens as pets. However, the church didn’t raise them as pets. They were kept simply to show the summer camp children the process of growth. Yet, as the chickens grew, we became attached to them. So, it was very difficult to deal with their possible death. As a result, the summer camp gave away the remaining chickens to a place that sold chickens. We then decided never to raise chickens again.
This incident with the chickens taught me valuable lessons. First, I learned that we must judge everything based on right values. Otherwise, we would be wasting time and resources on things that are merely meant for consumption. Second, I realized that we need to take precautions not to become attached to things that do not deserve our affection. 1 John 2:15-17 states, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
The command not to love the world means we should not set our hearts on worldly things, which are separated from God. It is an admonition against fixing our affections on things that gratify the flesh or on worldly attractions that merely appear impressive, all while straying from His Word. All such things are fleeting, but living according to God’s will remains forever. Therefore, abiding by God’s will must be our priority. Let us not envy others or think that we are less fortunate. Things of this world are fleeting. Let us remember that living as a true believer according to God’s will bears eternal fruit.
