“My father was pleased when I was better at something than him”
Last week, I mentioned that when I was in the 6th grade, my father spent six months at home after his business had failed. During that time, when he didn’t take my two brothers and me fishing, he mostly stayed home. One day, he offered to teach me how to play Omok (Gomoku). From that day, I was immediately captivated by the game. Partly it was because Omok was fun, but also because I won against my father. He was incredibly surprised and happy that I won on my second try. That day, I saw my father in a different light. If it were me, I would have really disliked losing. So, my father’s genuine happiness was fascinating to me.
My father passed away a while ago when I was a freshman in seminary. However, his genuine happiness for me has left a lasting impression. Who in this world would be pleased to see someone else do something better than themselves? I realized there is one more, our God the Father. After wrestling with Jacob, God said, “You have won,” and changed his name to Israel. Then He showered Jacob with overflowing blessings. Whenever I read this in the Bible, I used to think it was strange that God would say Jacob won when He is the almighty One who could not possibly lose. Well, it’s because God let him win. God purposely let him win because Jacob did not give up and continued to wrestle in prayer.
Perhaps my father, too, lost on purpose to see me, his son, win. Fathers want to bless their children, even if it means letting them win. God our Father is like this. May we remember this as we strive not to give up but to continue to wrestle through prayer.
