어느 인터뷰에서 인간공학의 한 권위자와 기자가 나눈 대화다. 기자가 그 권위자에게 물었다. “박사님, 그리스도인 중에서 모든 적성검사에서 한 가지도 좋은 것이 없는 사람을 본 적이 있나요?” 그러자 그 권위자는 이렇게 답했다. “참 그러기는 쉽지 않은데 8,000명 중 한 명꼴로 그런 사람이 나타납니다.”
그때 기자가 물었다. “그런 사람들은 어떻게 도와주시나요? 재능이 아무것도 없다면 참 가르치기가 힘들겠습니다.” 권위자가 답했다. “아니요, 그런 사람에게는 아무것도 도와주지 않습니다. 별로 걱정할 필요가 없기 때문입니다. 사실 그런 사람들은 우리에게 어떤 도움도 구하지 않습니다. 우리가 자신에게 도움이 안 된다는 것을 알기 때문입니다. 그런데 그러면서도 그들은 보통 놀랍게도 회사의 사장 같은 일을 하는 것을 봅니다.”
그 말을 들은 기자는 이해할 수 없어서 질문했다. “아니, 재능이 전혀 없는 사람들이 어떻게 사장이 될 수 있단 말입니까?” 권위자가 답했다. “그 부류의 사람들은 어떤 일도 쉽게 터득하기 어렵습니다. 그래서 젊었을 때부터 자신의 무능을 알고 끈기 있게 예수님께 매달려 삽니다. 그리고 그러는 동안 그들은 다른 사람이 경험할 수 없는 새로운 경험을 통해 창의력 있게 일을 해 나가기 때문이지요.”
오랜 세월 신앙생활을 하다 보니 권위자의 말에 동의하게 된다. 사람은 자기의 부족을 깨닫기 시작하면 주님께 매달리게 되고, 주님은 우리에게 지혜를 주시고 힘을 주신다. 그래서 생각지 못한 일을 하게 된다. 이런 이유로 사도 바울은 “내가 약한 그때에 강함이라”고 말하였다. 약함을 깨달을 때 주님을 의지하게 되어 강한 삶을 살게 된다는 말이다. 그러므로 결국 인생의 모든 일의 답은 기도라고 말할 수 있다.
“Prayer is the only answer”
The following is an interview of an ergonomics specialist. The reporter asked the specialist, “Doctor, have you ever met a Christian who scored poorly in every category on all aptitude tests?” The specialist replied, “That is indeed rare, but it happens…about one out of 8,000 people.”
The reporter then asked, “What kind of assistance are provided for them? If they possess no discernible talent, teaching them must be quite challenging.” The specialist responded, “We don’t offer specific assistance to them because there’s no significant concern. In fact, they don’t seek our help, for they understand we can’t be of assistance. However, despite this, they still achieve remarkable things. Some even become CEOs of companies.”
Confused, the reporter asked, “How could those with absolutely no talent become CEOs?”
The specialist explained, “These people find it difficult to master any skill easily. Therefore, because they recognize their limits from a young age, they persevere and cling onto Jesus. In doing so, they approach life creatively through unique experiences that others cannot access.”
As someone who has been a believer for a while, I concur with the specialist. When we realize our shortcomings, we cling to the Lord. Then He gives us wisdom and strength, which enables us to accomplish what we could have never imagined. As Paul said in the Bible, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Acknowledging our weakness allows us to rely on the Lord and be strong. Therefore, prayer is the answer to everything in life.
