“Precious moments”
I was born in Myeongryun-dong, Seoul, and lived there until my sixth year of elementary school. When my father’s business failed, our family moved to Damteo, a village on the border of Gyeonggi Province. For six months, my father was unemployed. Since rice was a luxury, we lived mostly on sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup) and kalguksu(chopped noodle soup) made from flour. Yet, thanks to my mother’s cooking skills, these meals were so delicious that I never realized we were poor. Occasionally, my mother would scold and argue with my father for not seeking employment, but he remained jobless for a while. During that time, he took my two brothers and me fishing every day at a nearby stream. I became so skilled at fishing that locals called me a prodigy.
Those were undoubtedly difficult days for my parents. They were distressed that they couldn’t provide more for their children. However, for my young self, those memories became incredibly precious. Even now, when I close my eyes, I recall walking alongside my father to our fishing spot and hearing him playfully call my name. These memories make me realize that children and adults often have different ideas about what constitutes precious time. Adults might believe that an affluent situation, where they can provide everything for their children, is most valuable. Yet, children often remember the simple act of spending time with their parents as the most precious gift.
We shouldn’t assume we are unhappy just because life is currently difficult or we cannot provide lavishly for our children. Even if there’s only a piece of bread, sharing our hearts and time with our children creates deeply precious memories for them—a truth we must never forget.
