우리 교회가 지금의 장소로 이전하면서 가장 잘한 일은 무엇보다 먼저 주민회장을 만난 일이었다고 생각한다. 나는 교회가 지역 주민과 분쟁이 없으려면 주민회장을 잘 알아두는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했다. 문제가 생기면 주민회장과 소통하면 될 것이라고 생각했기 때문이다. 그래서 이사 오자마자 주민회장에게 전화하여 만나자고 했다.
주민회장은 ‘멘딩고’라는 아프리카계 미국인이었다. 나는 그분을 만나 우리 교회가 이곳으로 이사 오게 되어 인사드리는 마음으로 점심을 사고 싶다고 했다. 그리고 내가 어려서부터 좋아하던 자장면을 대접했다. 자장면을 대접한 이유는 너무 과하게 대접하면 자기가 필요해서 점심을 산다고 생각할까 봐서였다. 그분은 자장면을 먹으면서 참 특이하고 좋다고 말했다. 그리고 우리 둘은 급격히 가까워졌다.
그분은 그날 이런 말을 했다. 교회가 커뮤니티 11지역에 이사 오면서 이렇게 먼저 인사하는 목사는 처음이라고 했다. 그러면서 앞으로 교회가 필요한 모든 것을 자기가 도울 것이라고 말했다. 그리고는 그분은 정말 그날부터 교회 편에 서서 동네에서 일어나는 모든 민원을 막아주었다. 그리고 교회가 확장하는 길을 열어주었다. 그래서 주민 중 한 사람은 그에게 도대체 교회로부터 무슨 뇌물을 받았기에 교회 편을 드냐고 따지는 분도 있었다. 그분이 교회로부터 받은 뇌물은 먼저 목사인 나의 인사와 자장면 한 그릇이었다.
그 주민회장은 20년 이상을 병들어 죽는 날까지 교회에 도움을 주다가 세상을 떠났다. 20년 동안 든든한 친구가 되어 교회 확장을 도운 것이다. 나는 이런 일을 경험하면서 예수님의 말씀은 참 진리라고 믿게 되었다. 먼저 대접할 때 생각지도 못하는 대접을 받게 되었기 때문이다.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (The Golden Rule)
The best decision our church made when we relocated to our current site was, without a doubt, meeting the president of the neighborhood association . I thought it would be wise to get to know the president well to avoid potential conflicts with local residents. Direct communication could resolve any issues that might arise. So, immediately after we moved in, I called the neighborhood association president and requested a meeting. The president, named Mr. Mendingo, met with me. I explained that I wanted to treat him to lunch since our church recently moved into the area. I took him to eat the Korean dish, jajangmyeon, one of my favorite food since childhood. I chose jajangmyeon because I thought he might think I was being opportunistic if I treated him to something too lavish. Well, as he ate, he remarked that it was very unique and delectable. From that day, our relationship quickly blossomed. He said that I was the first pastor to greet him and treat him out after moving into the community district 11. And promised to assist our church with any needs.
True to his word, from that day forward, he supported our church. He intercepted any complaints from the neighbors. And he facilitated the expansion of the church. He was so steadfast in supporting us that one resident even confronted him and asked if we had bribed him in any way. Well, the so-called bribe he received was simply my greeting and a single bowl of jajangmyeon. For over 20 years, until he passed away due to illness, Mr. Mendingo supported our church. For two decades, he remained a steadfast friend and was instrumental in the church’s growth. This made me realize once again that the words of Jesus are surely the truth. I received kindness and an outpouring of support, which is something I couldn’t even imagine when I bought a meal.
